Probiotics and Prebiotics - What are they?

What exactly is a probiotic? And what’s the difference between a probiotic and a prebiotic? A PRObiotic, per the World Health Organization, are “live micro-organisms (think bacteria) which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”. In our gut, it is estimated that we have about 3-10 times as many bacteria as human cells (100 trillion bugs all together) and there are thousands of different bacteria species. These probiotics help us to create some vitamins, digest food, and improve our immune system, among other important roles.
